I’m slightly embarassed to admit that when I heard this was a Gatsby retelling, I bounced off so hard. When I finally got over myself, picked it up, read the back cover and saw it had reimagined Jordan into a queer Vietnamese American adoptee, I brought it home.
I do not know how Nghi Vo managed to effortlessly weave this universe into a gorgeously told, poignant tale about immigration, excess, belonging, and the price of keeping your spark from going out. The magic in this world feels fluid, playful, alive.
